Greece and Italy have signed a memorandum of understanding to advance negotiations for the transfer of FREMM class frigates to the Hellenic Navy. The agreement, signed during the SEAFUTURE exhibition in La Spezia, initially foresees the acquisition of two vessels, with the possibility of two more, and includes a support package.

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias emphasized that although the frigates are about a decade old, they remain in excellent condition and could be modernized in partnership with Fincantieri.

According to Dendias, the incorporation of these frigates would mark a milestone in the modernization of the Greek Navy, which is already receiving four Kimon (FDI HN) frigates from France. He stressed that this measure would help fill the capability gap left by the financial crisis and would solidify Greece as a naval power in the Eastern Mediterranean. Technical inspections have already begun, with evaluations of vessels such as the Carlo Bergamini, Carlo Margottini, and Virginio Fasan.

If realized, the plan would allow the Hellenic Navy to have, by the beginning of the next decade, eight modern FREMM and FDI frigates, along with four upgraded units from the Hydra class. This would represent a significant capability leap with up to 192 ASTER 30 missiles in operation.

For Italy, the partnership strengthens bilateral ties with Greece, bolsters cooperation within NATO and the European Union, and paves the way for the renewal of its own fleet with the new FREMM EVO.
